hot water

Things you don’t think about, but really should when facing a burst hot water system

Burst hot water is dangerous, anxiety-inducing and makes a whole lot of mess. You hear the horror stories of the aftermath but then go back to normal life. But if burst hot water systems or pipes happen to anyone, it might happen to you. We list some things you need to consider, just in case.

Insurance

Have you seen the Allianz ad where the woman comes home only to find water flowing from under the door? Leaking or burst water systems quickly turn your house into an ocean (or a small lake) and the damage is far-reaching. Make sure that your home and contents insurance covers water damage. The company will send out assessors when you make a claim and will need the tank as evidence.

Injuries

Hot water is nice is a shower, but it’s tempered with cold water. It doesn’t scald, but it will when your tank pops. If you can, shut off the water supply before you tend to any injuries. The burst hot water will continue to flow unless you stop it at the source. In this case, it’s the main water line.

Treating burns requires cold water. You shut off you own water so you need an external supply. One bet is from a neighbour whose system is intact. If you have cold water in your fridge, or ice cubes, use them immediately. Having Panadol and the like on hand will help with the pain. If the injuries are severe, it’s best to call an ambulance.

Get a second opinion

Checking out the hot water system for yourself is all fine. If you suspect something is wrong, though, it’s best to get your plumber over for an inspection.

When the hot water system finally gives, your plumber is your best friend. They’ll assess the system and make recommendations about what type of replacement to choose. If you describe incident to them, they could tell you why the water burst at all.
